ROUNDUP: 17U teams bounce back with wins

The NEPA Elite 17U girls teams recovered from losing their first games Saturday to post evening victories in The Hoop Group’s Southern Jam Fest.

Both teams are 2-1 in the event at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, Va.

Claire Dougherty scored 23 points when the NEPA Elite Rini 17U team defeated the Maryland Shooting Stars, 57-27.

Dougherty scored 14 of her points in the first half when NEPA Elite built a 30-10 halftime lead.

Mia Blume added 11 points and Megan Desmet 8. Nadia Evanosky and Katherine Shepherd each made a pair of 3-pointers.

Shepherd had led the way with 14 points in the morning game when the Rini team fell to the South Jersey Titans, 49-45.

Chase Purdy added 13 points and Dougherty had 8.

The Rini team will play in the Gold Consolation bracket Sunday at 2:15 p.m.

Dougherty and Purdy are Lake-Lehman teammates during the high school season, Shepherd is from Western Wayne, Blume from Dunmore, Desmet from Wallenpaupack and Evanosky from Dallas.

The NEPA Elite Clark 17U team placed second in Pool A with a 2-1 record, finishing behind the Boo Williams Summer League – Boo EYBL 17U team that it lost to in the first of Saturday’s two night games.

The Clark team routed Pro Skills 2022 from Texas, 85-58, after its 79-58 loss to BWSL.

Kylie Lavelle scored 17 of her 19 points in the first half of the win.

Several players got involved offensively in the second half when the Clark team broke open a 37-34 game.

Leila Hurley had 11 of her 14 points; Kaci Kranson (12 points) and Olivia Smelas (9) did all of their scoring; and Ciera Toomey had 6 of her 10 in the second half.

Toomey had a team-high 18 points in the loss. Trinity Johnson scored all 10 of her points in the second half and Kylie Lavelle finished with 9. Anna Scoblick chipped in with seven points.

Lavelle is from Riverside; Hurley and Smelas are Jim Thorpe teammates; Kranson is from Holy Cross; Toomey from Dunmore; Johnson from Wyoming Valley West; and Scoblick from Abington Heights.

The Clark team qualified for the Platinum Championship bracket where it will play the DMV Lady Tigers 17U HGSL team in a 9:15 a.m. game.

The NEPA Elite 16U (Sheehan) team lost twice to finish 1-2 and third of four teams in the 16U Division Pool A. It will play in the 16U consolations at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

NEPA Elite fell to Lightning Flynn 2023 HGSL, 46-24, and Sideline Cancer 2023, 57-44.

Anna Williams was the top scorer with nine points in the first game. Lexi Corby added six.

Gianna Cafarella scored 16 points to lead the way in the second game. Molly Murphy had 12.

Williams and Corby are Tunkhannock teammates; Cafarella is from Scranton Prep; and Murphy is from Valley View.

The NEPA Elite 15U Scoblick team picked up a forfeit win, then lost, 68-61, to Central PA Dynamite 2024 HGSLl

The 1-2 finish in Pool A puts the team in a Sunday 8 a.m. 15U Platinum consolation game.

The NEPA Elite 15U Butler team lost twice in Pool B. The losses came to 1Life1Shot Basketball 15U, 36-22, and Unique Hoops Travel KOP, 45-25.
