The Holy Redeemer boys and Dunmore girls, both Class 3A championship teams, represent District 2’s top threats going into Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament play, according to the latest rankings from a suburban Pittsburgh media outlet.
Holy Redeemer climbed to No. 1 in the state in Class 3A boys and Dunmore to No. 2 in Class 2A girls in the latest TribHSSN.com rankings, which were released Wednesday.
TribHSSN.com ranks the top five in the state in each classification.
Holy Cross, in Class 2A boys, and Scranton Prep, in Class 4A boys, each joined the rankings in fifth. Scranton Prep replaced Valley View in the fifth spot after beating the Cougars in the District 2 final.
Holy Redeemer came within an overtime semifinal loss of playing in Hershey last season.
The Royals are followed in the rankings by Brookville, Trinity, Executive Education and West Catholic.
West Catholic, from Philadelphia, is a potential second-round opponent.
Dunmore trails only Lancaster Catholic. The teams would not meet until the state semifinals if they keep winning.
The Lady Bucks reached the quarterfinals in Class 4A last season despite playing without North Carolina commit Ciera Toomey, who was injured at the time.
TribHSSN.com ranks Reading (6A), Imhotep Charter (5A), Neumann-Goretti (4A), Dock Mennonite (2A) and unbeaten Linville Hill Christian (A), all from the eastern half of the state, as the other No. 1 boys teams.
Unbeatens Cedar Cliff and Hollidaysburg are No. 1 in Class 6A and 5A girls. Lansdale Catholic (4A), Redbank Valley (2A) and Williamsburg (A) are the other top-ranked girls teams.
