Sciandra keys WA outburst

Wyoming Area broke away from a tie game by scoring 42 points in less than 13 minutes to end the first half and start the second Friday night, turning a tight game into a 55-13 rout of visiting Carbondale in the District 2 Class 3A quarterfinals.

Nico Sciandra scored four of the six touchdowns while Wyoming Area was turning a 6-6 tie into a 48-6 lead and a Mercy Rule finish.

Sciandra carried 12 times for 145 yards and 3 third-quarter touchdowns. When Collin Bailer’s second field goal tied the game for Carbondale, 6-6, in the second quarter, Sciandra returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

Blaise Sokach-Minnick hit Rocco Pizano with a 26-yard touchdown pass in the last minute of the second quarter for a 20-6 halftime lead.

Sciandra ran 41, 17 and 11 for touchdowns in the third quarter when Aaron Crossley broke a 77-yard touchdown run.

They helped the Warriors pick up 340 yards rushing and 544 yards total offense.

Sokach-Minnick finished 7-for-15 for 156 yards passing.

Crossley had 86 yards on 4 carries and freshman Michael Crane had 56 yards, including a 22-yard, fourth-quarter touchdown on 5 carries.

Carbondale’s Vinny DePalma went over 100 yards rushing with the help of a 58-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.

Leo Haros scored Wyoming Area’s other touchdown on a 2-yard run in the first quarter.

Jayden Rusyn led the defense with five tackles and three assists. Joe Marranca and Aaron Crossley each had a sack and another tackle for a loss.

Wyoming Area (9-1) will host Lakeland (10-1) Friday in a district semifinal. Carbondale’s first season under head coach Jeff Arthur, ended at 5-6.
