Scranton Prep, Valley View girls post Lackawanna Division 1 wins

Scranton Prep’s defense made sure Abington Heights had more turnovers than points Thursday night while winning a meeting of ranked team, 40-21, in a Lackawanna League Division 1 girls basketball game.

The host Classics, the No. 1 Big School in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Basketball Power Rankings of District 2 teams, held Abington Heights to six points while opening a 13-point halftime lead.

Scranton Prep forced 22 turnovers in the game.

Gianna Cafarella hit 3-pointers in each of the first two quarters and Rita Collins had five points to key Scranton Prep’s 12-2, second-quarter advantage.

Cafarella finished with five 3-pointers and a game-high 17 points. Collins added 11.

The only Abington Heights leads were at 2-0 and 4-3.

The Classics then held the Lady Comets to one field goal for the last 12:32 of the first half.

Scranton Prep scored the last 12 points of the first half, then made it a 15-0 run when Cafarella opened the second half with a 3-pointer for a 22-6 lead.

Caroline Murray had 8 of her team-high 10 points in the third quarter, but Abington Heights could not cut into the Scranton Prep lead.

Peyton Houlihan grabbed eight rebounds for the Lady Comets.

Valley View 57, Scranton 53

Giada Costa scored 22 points as Valley View evened its league record at 1-1 with the road win.

Molly Murphy added 13 points in the win.
