Season in Review: Girls Swimming

EDITOR’S NOTE: As a step in getting ready for the 2022-23 winter sports season, NEPASportsNation.com is taking a look back at the 2021-22 season in District 2.

Champions

Dallas won both District 2 Class 2A and Wyoming Valley Conference titles.

Delaware Valley won its sixth straight District 2 Class 3A championship.

Scranton Prep repeated as Lackawanna League champion, also running its streak of titles to six.

Wyoming Valley Conference: Dallas 11-0, Wyoming Seminary 10-1, Tunkhannock 9-2, Hazleton Area 8-3, Berwick 7-4, Holy Redeemer 6-5, Pittston Area 5-6, Wyoming Area 4-7, Lake-Lehman 3-8, Nanticoke 1-10, Wilkes-Barre Area 1-10, Wyoming Valley West 1-10.

Final rankings

Dallas was the No. 1 team in the final Riverfront Sports Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams, followed by Wyoming Seminary in second, Scranton Prep in third, Delaware Valley in fourth, Tunkhannock in fifth and Valley View in sixth.

District highlights

Gabby Spaciano won the 200 individual medley and was part of two relay wins to lead Dallas to 328 points and a 119-point victory over second-place Scranton Prep in Class 2A.

Wyoming Seminary’s Ryleigh Collins and Alyssa Kelley (200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) each won two individual titles and a relay gold. Collins broke her district records in the 100-yard butterfly in 55.64 and the 500 freestyle in 4:54.90.

Scranton Prep’s Nicole Iriza won the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Delaware Valley won all three relays to post a 118½-point victory in Class 3A.

The Lady Warriors had 340½ points. Tunkhannock was second.

Alexis Ristaino, Victoria Corcoran and Kaitlyn O’Connell each were on two winning relays and won an individual event.

Madelyn Frey from Berwick won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Noteworthy

Ryleigh Collins from Wyoming Seminary finished second in the state in the 500-yard freestyle and third in the 100 butterfly in Class 2A girls at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Championships. … Dallas was sixth and Wyoming Seminary seventh in the state Class 2A team standings. … Scranton Prep has won 54 straight Lackawanna League meets since the 2015-16 season finale loss to Delaware Valley, that season’s champion.
