Sem girls 2nd in state swimming

The Wyoming Seminary team and Dallas distance competitor Lydia Gonzales finished second, highlighting District 2’s performances in Class 2A girls Thursday in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University.

Mount Pleasant ran away with the team title with 218½ points.

Wyoming Seminary beat out 3 teams by 10 points or less to finish second with 118 points.

Not far behind that pack was Dallas in sixth place with 99 points.

Valley View and MMI Prep tied for 32nd with 20 points while Scranton Prep was 39th with 15.

Gonzales finished second by the slimmest of margins.

After 500 yards of freestyle in the longest race of the meet, she was less than one-third of a second behind winner Shannon Kimberly from Lewisburg with a time of 4:55.81.

Kimberly and Gonzales were each more than five seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Mary Kate Kupsky from MMI Prep took fourth in the race.

Cara McCall, Ava Betnar, Alyssa Kelly and Ryleigh Collins gave Wyoming Seminary a third-place finish in the closing 400 freestyle relay.

Dallas was sixth in the same race with the team of Peyton Stauffer, Audrey Haydu, Olivia Thomas and Gonzales.

Collins added a fifth-place finish in the 100 freestyle and Kelly was seventh in the 100 breaststroke.

Valley View’s Molly Hubal placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

The top eight in each event competed in the finals, earned medals and scored points for their teams.
