All four Lackawanna Trail wrestlers won at least once and Wyoming Area advanced both its entries to the quarterfinals Thursday in Class 2A action as the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Wrestling Championships opened in Hershey.
Lackawanna Trail sent three wrestlers into Friday’s 9 a.m. quarterfinals.
Max Bluhm (152 pounds), Robbie Schneider (172) and Seth Ross (215) all advanced with quarterfinal wins after receiving byes into the Round of 16, the first full round of the tournament. Teammate Robbie Schneider won a preliminary-round bout before losing in the Round of 16.
Two-time defending champion Jaden Pepe and Wyoming Area teammate Anthony Evanitsky won their only bouts at 133 and 139 to reach the quarterfinals.
Mid Valley 121-pounder Matthew Almedina and Berwick 285-pounder Bruce Hartman each won in the preliminary round then lost in the next bout.
Honesdale’s Paul Renner was the only District 2 wrestler without a victory, dropping a one-point decision.
No wrestlers from District 2 were involved in the only round of consolations held Thursday to trim the field from 20 entries to 16 in each weight class.
Bluhm needed overtime to get past Saucon Valley’s Liam Scrivanich, 3-2.
Both Ross brothers won by pin, with Seth closing out his bout with nine seconds left in the first period.
Pepe decisioned Burgettstown’s Gaven Suica, 14-7.
Evanitsky won by major decision, 12-2, over Littlestown’s Cameron Mingee.
