Logan Tierney carried 22 times for 209 yards and 3 touchdowns Friday night to lift Holy Cross to a 22-14, non-league football victory over host Hanover Area.
Tierney scored in each of the last three quarters to help the Crusaders improve to 2-1 after going winless a year ago and sitting out the 2019 season because of too few players. The last two touchdowns brought Holy Cross back from a 14-8 deficit.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Tierney ran 4 yards for the first touchdown and Nate Cobley added the two-pointer for an 8-0 lead 16 seconds into the second.
Christian Torres ran for 4- and 3-yard touchdowns for Hanover Area 3:38 apart. Jeremy Vega added the tying two-pointer after the first touchdown. The second put the Hawkeyes ahead, 14-8, with 5:31 left in the half.
The lead lasted 19 seconds.
Tierney broke an 80-yard touchdown run and Cobley threw for the go-ahead two-pointer.
The score remained at 14-12 for almost 28½ minutes until Tierney added a 3-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds left.
The game ended on a Holy Cross interception of a desperation pass.
Hanover Area fell to 1-2.
