State tournament play in girls tennis, district championship games in boys soccer and the start of the football playoffs are all on Friday’s agenda in District 2 sports.
Friday is the first of two days of singles and doubles competition in Hershey in girls tennis.
Abington Heights and Riverside both have a singles player and a doubles team in action.
Both teams have a four-time district singles champion entered.
Bella Peters from Abington Heights, the district’s Class 3A singles champion, gets things started at the Hershey Indoor Racquet Club in an 8 a.m. match. Her teammates, Rina Hanumali and Susan Arp, play in Class 3A doubles at 10 a.m.
Riverside’s entries have medaled in Hershey before.
Karissa Ghigiarelli was a state champion in 2019 before missing last year’s tournament with a back injury. Her Class 2A singles opener is scheduled for noon.
Madeline DeFaber-Schumacher and Bella Aniska, bronze medalists a year ago, play in Class 2A doubles at 2 p.m.
Any of those entries who win will play again in the afternoon quarterfinals. The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Saturday.
The first two of four District 2 boys soccer championship games are also on the schedule.
Wyoming Area hosts Wyoming Seminary at 2 p.m. for the Class 2A title. Wyoming Area is the top seed. Wyoming Seminary is the defending champion.
The same type of matchup plays out in Class A where top-seed Holy Cross meets defending champion Mountain View at Schautz Stadium in Dunmore at 6:30.
The football playoffs begin with four quarterfinals in Class 4A, two quarterfinals in Class 3A, two semifinals each in Class 6A and 2A and a quarterfinal in the District 2-11 Class 5A Subregional.
Defending champion Crestwood is at top-seeded Valley View in Class 4A where the other games have Pittston Area at Dallas, Honesdale at North Pocono and Wallenpaupack at Berwick.
Western Wayne is at Mid Valley and Carbondale is at Wyoming Area in Class 3A.
The Class 6A schedule has defending champion and top seed Delaware Valley at home against Scranton and Hazleton Area hosting Wilkes-Barre Area.
Riverside is at top-seeded Lackawanna Trail and Susquehanna is at defending champion Dunmore in Class 2A.
Wyoming Valley West plays the top seed in the Class 5A Subregional when it travels to play East Stroudsburg South.
Schuylkill Valley is at Nanticoke for a one-game Class 3A playoff in the Eastern Conference, which does not advance teams into state play.
