Wyoming Valley Conference boys golfers opened their season and all sports for the 2022-23 academic year in District 2 Thursday with a pair of matches.

Friday, it’s the Lackawanna League’s turn with a busier schedule of matches on its opening day.

The Lackawanna League switched from four to two divisions this season, setting up a meeting of 2021 division champions on Opening Day with Riverside playing at Scranton Prep at 4 p.m. at Glenmaura.

Scranton Prep is ranked second and Riverside third among Small Schools in the preseason Riverfront Sports Super Six Golf Power Rankings of District 2 teams. The Cavaliers have won six straight division titles, including Division 1 the past two seasons when Riverside was winning Division 2.

Scranton Prep begins the season on an 83-match Lackawanna League unbeaten streak.

The first match of the day sends Abington Heights to West Scranton at noon. The Comets are the top-ranked Big School in the Super Six.

Second-ranked Big School Crestwood is at third-ranked Hazleton Area at 3 p.m. in WVC Class 3A Division looking for a second straight significant road win.

The Comets opened the season in the newly aligned WVC facing the two teams that won titles last season when the conference’s Class 3A teams were split into two divisions.
