Opening day of the Lackawanna League Division 1 and 3 girls soccer seasons combines with other conference openers postponed from Tuesday and Wednesday to make Thursday a busy day on the District 2 schedule across multiple sports.
Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 girls soccer and Lackawanna Division 3 boys soccer games will also be played for the first time after being delayed previously.
Of the six Lackawanna Division 1 girls soccer teams, four arrive at the league opener with winning records overall and another is at .500.
The schedule is: defending champion Delaware Valley (1-1) at possible favorite Abington Heights (2-0), Valley View (3-0) at Wallenpaupack (3-2) and Scranton Prep (2-3) at North Pocono (3-1).
Holy Redeemer (1-1) is at Lake-Lehman (3-0) in a WVC Division 2 game that is also a rematch of the last three District 2 Class 2A championship games.
In boys soccer, unbeaten Wilkes-Barre Area (3-0 overall) is at defending champion Crestwood (1-1) in a WVC Division 1 opener for both teams.
In boys golf, the Lackawanna League Division 1 title could ultimately be decided in the match that sends North Pocono (5-0-1) to Glen Oak Country Club to face Abington Heights (7-0-1). The teams tied in an earlier meeting at Elmhurst Country Club.
Lackawanna Division 2 also has Montrose (6-1) at Lackawanna Trail (7-1) and Scranton Prep (6-0) at Mid Valley (7-2).
In girls tennis, winning teams go head-to-head in three Wyoming Valley Conference and one Lackawanna League match.
The WVC schedule has Hazleton Area (5-1) at Wyoming Seminary (5-0), Dallas (5-0) at Crestwood (2-1) and Holy Redeemer (3-1) at Wyoming Area (3-2).
Wallenpaupack (5-0 league, 5-1 overall) is at Delaware Valley (3-1) in the Lackawanna.
In field hockey, defending champion Wallenpaupack (1-1 overall) is at Pittston Area (1-2) in a WVC Division 2 opener in a game between the teams that finished 1-2 in last year’s standings.
In girls volleyball, two of the top three teams in Division 2 of the Lackawanna meet when Mountain View (2-1, 3-2) plays at Lackawanna Trail (2-0, 2-1).
Lackawanna Division 1 matches include first-place Blue Ridge (2-0) at defending champion Western Wayne (1-1, 1-3) and Dunmore playing its season opener at North Pocono (1-1, 2-1).
In cross country, the Lackawanna got in one of four cluster meets Wednesday and the WVC conducted just one of five that were scheduled.
The bulk of those openers will take place Thursday, including Delaware Valley, Wallenpaupack and Honesdale going against Abington Heights, North Pocono and host Valley View in the Lackawanna.
