Playoffs will be needed to determine the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 and Lackawanna League Division 2 boys soccer titles after the results of Monday night’s games were unable to do so.
Wilkes-Barre Area denied Wyoming Area a chance to take the WVC Division 1 title when I won, 2-0.
Instead, Dallas and Hazleton Area finished tied for first and will meet in a playoff Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Berwick’s Crispin Field.
Holy Cross and Dunmore have played 200 minutes of soccer with no separation. After Monday’s game resulted in a second 3-3 tie between the borough rivals, who have beaten everyone else in the division twice each, a third game will be needed to determine a champion.
This time, if the Crusaders and Bucks are still tied after two overtimes Thursday night at 6:30 at Scranton Memorial Stadium, they will go to a shootout to decide a winner.
Dallas went 7-3-2 in the division and Hazleton Area was 8-4. Because ties are treated as a half a win and a half a loss, the two ties leave Dallas with the equivalent of Hazleton Area’s 8-4 record. Both teams finish with .667 winning percentages.
After finishing tied at the top of a race where five teams ended up within 1½ games of the lead, they will decide the title in a one-game playoff. Wyoming Area wound up 7-4-1, Wilkes-Barre Area was 7-5 and Tunkhannock was 6-5-1.
Dallas won the first meeting, 3-2, at home in September, then lost the rematch at Hazleton Area, 3-1, earlier this month.
