Valley View preserves top ranking

Valley View offered a resounding case for its status as the No. 1 Big School in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Softball Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The Cougars and Mid Valley, which was similarly impressive in its title run, remained in the top spots when the latest rankings were released late Thursday morning.

These are the last rankings until all District 2 teams have completed their state tournaments.

Abington Heights and Elk Lake used their championships to climb in the rankings while Hazleton Area used its title to move back in.

Valley View defeated Tunkhannock, 8-1, in a District 2 Class 4A championship game meeting between the teams that remain No. 1 and 2. Both had 21-1 records going in and each had won Division 1 championships of the district’s two leagues.

Tunkhannock lost out on a chance to make it third state title appearance while Pittston Area’s reigns as district, subregional and state champion ended.

Abington Heights used a 2-1 victory over Pittston Area in the District 2-4 Class 5A Subregional championship game to swap places with the Lady Patriots, moving from fourth to third.

North Pocono remains fifth.

Hazleton Area took over as No. 6 with its District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional title. The Lady Cougars replaced West Scranton, which fell to Abington Heights, 7-1, in the Class 5A semifinals.

Mid Valley pounded Holy Redeemer, 12-2, in the District 2 Class 3A championship game to hold on to the top Small School spot.

Elk Lake moved back into second, trading places with Lake-Lehman after repeating its District 2 Class 2A title.

Lake-Lehman dropped to third after an extra-inning loss to Holy Redeemer in the Class 3A semifinals.

Mid Valley and Elk Lake won Lackawanna League Division 2 during the regular season while Lake-Lehman won Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2.

Old Forge, Holy Redeemer and Holy Cross remain fourth, fifth and sixth.

The Lady Devils held fourth by winning the District 2-3 Class A Subregional title.

Holy Redeemer and Holy Cross lost in the 3A and 2A championship games.
