WA new No. 1; showdowns set

The Golden Dome Abstract Super Six Field Hockey Power Rankings of District 2 teams went through major changes just in time to be put to the test.

Wyoming Area replaces Wyoming Seminary as the No. 1 team for the first time in the two years that the rankings have been compiled by NEPASportsNation.com.

The Lady Warriors, District 2’s only unbeaten team, will immediately put their ranking and sole possession of the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 lead on the line when they play at Wyoming Seminary Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The new rankings were released at noon Wednesday.

Wyoming Seminary has won WVC Division 1, District 2 Class A and Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state Class A titles each of the past four seasons.

Wyoming Area took over No. 1 in the rankings when Lake-Lehman knocked off Wyoming Seminary, 1-0, in a WVC game.

Wyoming Seminary, which had earlier lost and tied games with non-PIAA opponents, settled into the No. 2 spot with help of its second win of the season over Kentucky state champion Sacred Heart and a 4-0 victory over Eastern Regional, a Voorhees, N.J. school that has one of the nation’s top programs.

Lake-Lehman’s victory ended the following Wyoming Seminary streaks:

  • 83-game unbeaten streak against PIAA competition, dating back to 2017 state final loss to Greenwood.
  • 81-game unbeaten streak against District 2 competition, dating back to 2016 district playoffs against Lake-Lehman (3-2).
  • 69-game winning streak against PIAA competition, dating back to 2018 tie with Wyoming Area.
  • 68-game unbeaten streak in WVC games since 2-1 loss to Coughlin late in 2016 season.
  • 51-game winning streak against District 2 competition, dating back to 2018 tie with Wyoming Area.
  • 40-game winning streak in WVC games since 0-0 tie with Wyoming Area in 2018.

While Wyoming Area and Wyoming Seminary meet in a game between the top two teams, the next two teams also are scheduled to meet Wednesday at 6.

Lake-Lehman and Crestwood each moved up a spot into third and fourth.

Crestwood hosts their WVC game Wednesday.

Lake-Lehman added a win over Moses Brown (R.I.) to its win over Wyoming Seminary.

Crestwood won four times during the week, stretching its winning streak to five. One of the wins came against Honesdale, which also fell to Wyoming Area, and slipped from third to fifth.

Lackawanna Trail won its only game and held sixth.
