MOSCOW – After five hours of tennis action at the North Pocono Middle School early Saturday, the stage is set for the District 2 Class 3A girls doubles semifinals.

Two duos each from West Scranton and Abington Heights found their way onto that stage. The semifinals and finals, originally scheduled for Monday at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre, beginning, will be delayed until Wednesday or Thursday because the Class 2A early rounds still need to be completed.

Top-seeded Rina Hanumall and Susan Arp from Abington Heights had no trouble reaching the semifinals; winning both their second round and quarterfinal matchups in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

Their teammates, No. 6 seed Hanna Adonizio and Faith Bennett, had a little tougher road to get through the tournament’s first day. They won their opening matchup in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, but it took three sets to secure their spot in the semifinals.

Adonizio-Bennett needed a tiebreaker to take the first set off third-seeded Rebecca Husson-Erika Badner of Wallenpaupack, 7-6. They lost the second set, 4-6, but finished strong taking the third set, 6-1.

Madison Maloney and Mia Butka, the second-seeded team from West Scranton, took care of business in both of their matchups as well. They lost just one game in two matches, winning the first set of the quarterfinal, 6-1, and taking the other three sets, 6-0.

The second Invaders tandem, fourth-seeded Gabrielle Chantiloupe and Camilla Sphabximay, faced a little more resistance on their trip to the semifinals. In their first match they won 6-3, 6-2. In their quarterfinal matchup they had a come-from-behind, tie-breaker win in the first set, 7-6. Chantiloupe and Sphabximay then carried the momentum from the thrilling first set to win the second, 6-0.

Parri Salak and Nora Pencek from North Pocono knocked out fifth-seeded Maia Philbin and Julia Bergman from Scranton before taking Chantiloupe-Sphabmixay to the tiebreaker in the first set of their quarterfinal match.

The semifinal matchups will be Hanumali-Arp against Chantiloupe-Sphabmixay and Adonizio-Bennett against Maloney-Butka.
