Quarterback George Whaley’s 4-yard run with 28 seconds left Saturday afternoon broke a tie and lifted Williamsport to a 14-7 Wyoming Valley Conference Class 6A/5A Division victory over Wilkes-Barre Area in a football game played at Wyoming Valley West’s Spartan Stadium in Kingston.
Whaley was 7-for-14 for 130 yards passing and threw for the game’s first score. He hit Frankie Morrone with an 18-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
Howie Shiner’s 15-yard run late in the second quarter brought the Wolfpack into a 7-7 tie.
The game, which featured 19 penalties and 6 turnovers, remained tied until Williamsport put together an 11-play, 55-yard scoring drive in the final 5 minutes.
The Millionaires improved to 5-4 with a chance to tie Hazleton Area (6-3) for the best record in the division if they can beat the Cougars head-to-head in the regular-season finale.
Wilkes-Barre Area dropped to 4-5, including 2-2 in games decided by seven points or less.
