WRESTLING: Patriots win opener

Pittston Area got off to a fast start in the first league wrestling match in District 2 this season.

The Patriots used first-period pins by Brody Spindler, Dave Sudo and Oscar Ciriaco in the first three bouts Wednesday night to get started toward a 49-18 road victory over defending champion Hazleton Area in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 season opener.

The match started at 215.

Spindler and Sudo got the first two pins in the two highest weight classes before Ciriaco won at 107.

A forfeit at 114 pushed the lead to the maximum 24-0 after four bouts.

Two more first-period pins in succession at 145 and 152 by Dominic Innamorati and Julian Everitt secured the win.

In other Wednesday wrestling action:

Abington Heights 75, Tunkhannock 0

Aidan Ryan’s 13-second pin at 138 highlighted a quick, non-league win by Abington Heights.

The Comets, last season’s Lackawanna League Division 1 champion, had already won the Battle of Bethlehem Duals this season. They improved to 6-0.

Caleb Marzolino (145) and Brian Heard (160) added first-period pins.

Wallenpaupack 47, Western Wayne 30

Wallenpaupack also reached 6-0, following up the championship of the Gary Woodruff Duals at Wyalusing by beating visiting Western Wayne.

Xaiden Schock and Justin Gougeon won in 23 seconds and 1:16 at 215 and 285 to start the match. Western Wayne used three straight pins to get within striking distance before Conar Kier and Henry Baranowski finished off the win with pins in 20 and 23 seconds at 172 and 189.

Elsewhere

Wilkes-Barre Area opened its season with a 48-24 victory over Hanover Area, beginning with four straight first-period pins from Brandon Haertter, Aidan Fitzgibbon, Liam Evanko and Lucas Macking from 127 to 145.

In other non-league matches: Honesdale routed Montrose, 65-6; West Scranton handled Lake-Lehman, 60-12; and Valley View downed Scranton Prep, 51-12.
