KINGSTON – Wyoming Area used the biggest win in program history to regain the No. 1 position in the Golden Dome Abstract Super Six Field Hockey Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
The Lady Warriors had been to two of the last three Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class A state semifinals, but they had never won a District 2 title and they were not going back to the state tournament if they could not get past the four-time defending state champions.
The other district champions, Honesdale and Crestwood, also gained ground when the rankings were compiled following the completion of the District 2 tournament late Wednesday night.
Wyoming Area broke through after years of closely pursuing Wyoming Seminary, winning 1-0 in Tuesday night’s District 2 Class A championship game.
The Lady Warriors had taken over No. 1 in the Super Six for a week earlier this season.
Wyoming Seminary, which had been ranked first every other week of the two-year-old rankings, slipped back to the second spot.
Honesdale moved up by capturing the District 2 Class 3A title and Crestwood did the same by winning the District 2-4 Class 2A title in a doubleheader at Wyoming Seminary’s Nesbitt Stadium Wednesday.
The Lady Hornets went from fourth to third after beating Wyoming Valley West, 2-1, in the final.
Lake-Lehman, which had already been eliminated in the District 2 Class A semifinals, slipped from third to fourth.
Crestwood shut out Selinsgrove, 2-0, in the subregional final to move up a spot to fifth.
Lackawanna Trail dropped from fifth to sixth after falling to Wyoming Area, 1-0, in the semifinals.
