2A doubles tourney resumes Monday

Wyoming Seminary’s Ella Krypel and Ilana Rosenthal and Scranton Prep’s Sarah Aubrey and Leelah Farrell will try to join teammates in the quarterfinals when the District 2 Class 2A girls tennis doubles tournament resumes Monday at 2 p.m. at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre.

The field was trimmed from 34 teams to 10 Saturday, but before the tournament could be reduced to the 4 semifinalists, as planned, it was halted because of inclement weather.

When play was stopped, six seeded teams had already reached the quarterfinals.

If Krypel-Rosenthal, the second seeds, and Aubrey-Farrell, the eighth seeds, avoid upsets, they will give their District 2 team finalist squads two doubles teams in the quarterfinals.

Holy Cross also has a shot at having two quarterfinalists if the team of Maddy Kranson-Kaci Kranson can get past Aubrey-Farrell.

Dallas, Holy Redeemer and Riverside, which has the top-seeded defending champions, also have a team already in the quarterfinals.

Honesdale has the other team still in action with Kayla Kuta-Hannah Merritt set to face Krypel-Rosenthal.

The two remaining matches from the second round are scheduled for 2 p.m. Quarterfinal action begins at 3 p.m.

The most dominant effort from Saturday was turned in by fifth-seeded Dominica Delayo-Margaret Mihalick from unbeaten District 2 team champion Wyoming Seminary, who lost just one game in four sets.

The top seeds, Riverside’s Madeline DeFaber-Schumacher and Bella Aniska dropped just one game in each of their two wins.

It was a day for the favorites with none of the top seven seeds losing a set. The eighth and final seed, Scranton Prep’s Aubrey-Farrell had to fight off an upset bid by Hanover Area’s Ally Richards-Karlee Yuscavage to win in three sets.

Other teams to get through to the quarterfinals with two wins were: Alyssa Wigley-Annie Johnson from Scranton Prep, Caroline Stallard-Audrey DelGaudio from Dallas, Carissa Benderavich-Khushi Syed from Holy Redeemer and Caitlyn Bestrycki-Christina Monroe from Holy Cross.
