Bella Summa’s game-winning single highlighted a four-run bottom of the fifth inning that rallied West Scranton past Valley View, 5-3, Wednesday in a meeting of Lackawanna League Division 1 softball unbeatens.
West Scranton took a half-game lead over Abington Heights by improving to 3-0 in the division. The Lady Invaders matched Mid Valley for the best overall softball record in District 2 at 4-0.
Valley View, which fell to 1-1 and 2-1, led 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth.
Madison Maloney, who joined Summa with two hits each, led off the inning with a single.
Winning pitcher Mia Butka drew her third walk of the game, then Gianna Russo doubled to left field to drive in a run and put two runners in scoring position.
Olivia Dougher’s groundout tied the game.
Summa then lined a single to right field to score Russo.
Mia Keenan’s double scored Summa.
Butka struck out nine while giving up just one earned run.
Kalli Karwaski singled, doubled, scored and drove in a run. Taylor Cawley also had two hits, a run and an RBI.
North Pocono improved to 2-0 by shutting out Scranton Prep, 15-0, in Lackawanna Division 1-2 crossover game.

BASEBALL
North Pocono overcame a six-run second inning by Scranton Prep to post an 8-7 victory in a Lackawanna League Division 1-2 crossover that left the Trojans with the best record in District 2.
The win improved the Trojans to 2-0 in the league and 4-0 overall.
North Pocono had scored four times in the first inning.
Aidan DeLucy had a home run and drove in three runs while Ty LaFave went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Alex Brinkman doubled twice and drove in two runs.
The other Lackawanna game was decided by one run with Mid Valley edging Holy Cross, 3-2.
Hanover Area needed eight innings to get past Wyoming Seminary, 4-2, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 game.
BOYS TENNIS
The top teams kept rolling.
Abington Heights and Valley View improved to 7-0 in the Lackawanna League with 5-0 victories over Holy Cross and West Scranton respectively.
Scranton Prep shut out Western Wayne, 5-0, to reach 6-1.
Delaware Valley (5-2) also won, 5-0, beating Dunmore.
MMI Prep (3-1 in the WVC, 4-1 overall) shut out Hazleton Area, 5-0.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Crestwood rallied to win the last three sets and its first WVC match of the season.
The Comets were 0-3 and trailing Hazleton Area, which came in at 2-1, when they recovered from a two-set deficit.
Zayne Dunsmuir and Bailey Durofchalk led the way as Crestwood won, 16-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-13.
Dunsmuir had 10 kills and 7 blocked shots.
Durofchalk had 23 assists, 14 digs and 12 service points.
Anthony Wan added 7 kills and 17 service points, including 3 aces.
Angelo Zarola and Austin Finarelli had seven kills each while leading the team in digs when Dallas swept Hanover Area, 25-16, 25-22, 25-21, in a WVC match.
Zarola had 14 digs and matched Brandon Banks for the team lead with 8 service points. Finarelli had 12 digs and 7 points.
Banks also had 17 assists.
Tunkhannock is alone in first at 4-0 after beating Wilkes-Barre Area in four sets.
The Tigers won, 25-14, 23-25, 25-14, 25-14.
TRACK AND FIELD
Leah Zambetti won all three throws while Aria Messner won all three jumps as Pittston Area routed Wilkes-Barre Area, 126-19, in a WVC Division 1 girls meet.
Pittston Area and Crestwood in WVC Division 1; Lakeland and Mid Valley in Lackawanna Track Conference Division 3; and Lackawanna Trail in LTC Division 4 all won both their boys and girls meets.
