ROUNDUP: Lady Invaders sweep

Gabrielle Chantiloupe posted a 6-0 first set to get West Scranton started Thursday afternoon on the way to a 5-0 victory over North Pocono in a Lackawanna League girls tennis match between ranked teams that reached last season’s District 2 Class 3A semifinals.

Chantiloupe, Mia Butka and Katherine Barnansky won the singles matches in straight sets to help the Lady Invaders, ranked No. 2 among Big Schools in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Girls Tennis Power Rankings of District 2 teams, improve to 2-1.

North Pocono, ranked fourth among Small Schools after a switch to Class 2A this season, is 0-2.

Isabella Gigliotti-Celia Emiliani, the West first doubles team, also won in straight sets. Ally Anderson-Ella Frounfelker rallied to win second doubles in three sets.

In other Lackawanna League matches: Abington Heights shut out Western Wayne, 5-0; Delaware Valley blanked Mid Valley, 5-0; Delaware Valley shut out Mid Valley, 5-0; Valley View topped Holy Cross, 4-1; Wallenpaupack handled Montrose, 5-0; and Scranton defeated Riverside, 4-1.

Defending champion Abington Heights improved to 2-0, one-half match behind Wallenpaupack.

Susan Arp, Rina Hanumali and Sona Hanumali each lost just one game in their straight-sets singles victories for Abington Heights.

Defending champion Wyoming Seminary shut out Crestwood, 4-0, in a Wyoming Valley Conference match.

Maya Rosenthal won, 6-0, 6-0, at second singles for the Blue Knights.

Ella Krypel and Lisa Martens, at first and third singles, and Addison Priebe-Ama Reitsma, at first doubles, also won in straight sets.

The second doubles match was not completed. It had reached a second-set tiebreaker, which was tied, 8-8, between Madison Van Gordon-Samantha Olszyk from Crestwood and Elisabeth Moules-Sarah Connors from Wyoming Seminary.

In other WVC matches: Tunkhannock shut out Berwick, 5-0, and Hazleton Area edged MMI Prep, 3-2.

BOYS GOLF

Gabe Fatula shot a 3-over-par, 38 on the front nine at Fox Hill Country Club as Hazleton Area held on to second place in the Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A Division with a 160-177 victory over Pittston Area.

Christian Smith and Jake Babinchak each added 40s.

Ethan Owen led Pittston Area with a 41.

Holy Redeemer handled Hanover Area, 154-213, in a WVC Class 2A Division match.

Frank Summa picked up his 100th career coaching victory as Abington Heights remained unbeaten in the Lackawanna League Class 3A Division with an 8-1 victory over Delaware Valley on the Glen Oak Country Club front nine.

Luke Morgan posted his 20th career league singles win with the help of rolling in a 60-foot putt for eagle on 7.

Connor Abel had birdies on 3 and 7 as part of a round in which he won his singles point and his better-ball point with Cade Kelleher in the minimum five holes.

Wallenpaupack shut out West Scranton, 9-0, in the other Class 3A Division match.

Riverside shut out Holy Cross, 9-0, and Mid Valley defeated Forest City, 8-1, in Lackawanna Class 2A Division matches.
