Tuesday was scheduled to be Opening Day for Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 boys soccer and WVC Division 2 girls soccer and field hockey.
It could quite possibly turn into another day of volleyball only if the threat of more afternoon rain eliminates the outdoor activity. At minimum, the weather is likely to reduce the schedule.
The girls volleyball schedule includes a meeting of what could be the top two teams in the Lackawanna League when Blue Ridge, a newcomer to Division 1, hosts North Pocono. Both teams are 1-0 in the league. North Pocono is 2-0 overall.
Delaware Valley opens its Wyoming Valley Conference girls volleyball title defense at Hazleton Area.
The conference got underway last week with just three matches, so more than half the teams are still looking to get started.
Another WVC opener has Berwick (2-0) at Crestwood (0-0) in a meeting of teams in the Electric City Volleyball Academy Elite Eight Power Rankings of District 2 teams. Berwick is No. 2 while Crestwood is No. 7.
The boys soccer schedule of WVC Division 1 openers has Wyoming Area (3-1) at Wilkes-Barre Area (3-0), Dallas (0-0) at Tunkhannock (1-1) and Crestwood (1-1) at Hazleton Area (0-1).
Wyoming Area is playing its first game since moving up after winning Division 2 last season. The Crestwood-Hazleton Area game matches teams ranked among the Big Schools in the preseason Riverfront United Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
No. 3 Lake-Lehman (3-0) is scheduled to be at No. 2 Holy Redeemer (1-1) in a WVC Division 2 battle of ranked Small School girls teams.
The Lackawanna League golf schedule calls for two meetings of ranked teams – North Pocono at Wallenpaupack in the Class 3A Division and Lackawanna Trail at Riverside in the Class 2A Division. Once-beaten teams are scheduled to meet with Montrose playing at Western Wayne.
