ROUNDUP: Royals, Mountaineers, Lady Meteors post one-goal soccer wins
Mark Atherton’s goal completed Holy Redeemer’s comeback from a two-goal deficit to beat Wyoming Seminary, 3-2, in a game between highly regarded Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys soccer teams Tuesday, Sept. 12.
The game matched two of the top three teams in the Small School boys portion of the Riverfront United Super Six Soccer Power Rankings of Division 2 teams.
Holy Redeemer improved to 2-0 in the division and 4-0 overall with the victory. Wyoming Seminary dropped to 2-1 and 3-2.
Colin Whitman and Jake Ohrin had the first two Holy Redeemer goals.
Owen Rowlands assisted Thomas Iskra and Matt Swartz on the Wyoming Seminary goals.
The result allowed Pittston Area to move into first place in the division at 3-0 with its 4-1 victory over MMI Prep.
Fabrice Gatsinzi had two goals and an assist for the Patriots.
Lake-Lehman shut out Nanticoke, 5-0, in the other Division 2 game.
Cole Kaiser and Evan Kaiser had two goals each for the Black Knights. Cole assisted one of Evan’s goals.
Jace Chopyak’s overtime goal lifted Dallas over Hazleton Area, 3-2, in WVC Division 1.
Wyoming Valley West beat Crestwood, 3-2, in another WVC Division 1 game.
GIRLS SOCCER
Katie Diaz scored the game’s only goal in the second half to lift Montrose over Lakeland, 1-0, in a game for the Lackawanna League Division 2 lead.
The two teams, who split in the last two District 2 Class A championship game, entered the game tied for first place with 2-0 records in the division.
Alisha Davis scored in overtime to lift Dunmore over Scranton, 3-2, and Honesdale handled Western Wayne, 5-2, in other Lackawanna Division 2 games.
Elsewhere: Valley View shut out North Pocono, 1-0; Delaware Valley blanked Scranton Prep, 4-0; and Abington Heights routed Wallenpaupack, 7-1, in Lackawanna Division 1. Carbondale and Holy Cross played to a 1-1 tie; Elk Lake defeated Forest City, 7-1; and Mid Valley shut out West Scranton, 7-0, in Lackawanna Division 3. Wyoming Valley West shut out Berwick, 5-0; Wilkes-Barre Area edged Hazleton Area, 1-0; and Crestwood ripped Pittston Area, 9-2, in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Delaware Valley, Pittston Area and Berwick all posted Wyoming Valley Conference sweeps without ever giving up more than 17 points in any of their three sets.
Defending champion Delaware Valley was the most dominant, routing MMI Prep, 25-12, 25-3, 25-9.
Olivia Conza had 19 assists, Emily Henn 8 kills and Katherine Quinn 6 kills for the Lady Warriors.
Jazmyne Bates had 17 service points while Jessica Rhule and Leah Weinreb had 10 each. Rhule had seven aces.
Pittston Area handled Hanover Area, 25-5, 25-16, 25-15.
Evelyn Pourmonir led the way with 13 service points, 10 aces and 4 kills. Emma Rinaldi had 12 points, 7 aces and 4 kills. Olivia Walter added eight points with the help of five aces.
Berwick defeated Tunkhannock, 25-17, 25-11, 25-14, with the help of 19 kills, 9 points and 4 digs from Cece Isenberg.
Sarah Steeber added 10 points, 7 kills, 4 digs and 2 aces. Camille Pinterich had 13 digs, 12 points, 3 aces and 2 assists.
Cassidy Evans chipped in with five digs.
Crestwood defeated Nanticoke in four sets in the other WVC match.
North Pocono swept Abington Heights, 25-16, 25-20, 25-7, in a Lackawanna League match.
In other Lackawanna matches: Lackawanna Trail swept Elk Lake; Susquehanna swept Forest City; Dunmore defeated Western Wayne in four sets; and Mountain View downed Montrose in four sets.
FIELD HOCKEY
Caroline Pease scored five goals and assisted on the other as Abington Heights remained on top of Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 with a 6-0 romp over visiting Holy Redeemer.
Madison Zalewski scored the other goal and also had an assist.
The Comets are 3-0 and the Lady Royals fell to 1-1 in the division.
All four division games ended in shutouts.
Pittston Area routed Berwick, 11-0; Nanticoke defeated Hanover Area, 5-0; and Wallenpaupack blanked Tunkhannock, 1-0.
Pittston Area held Berwick without a shot or penalty corner.
Nanticoke’s Grace Reed had a hat trick before the first quarter was over and finished with four goals and an assist.
BOYS GOLF
First-place Abington Heights completed a five-day stretch in which it defeated the second-, third- and fourth-place teams by defeating Honesdale, 8-1.
Robert Munley had two birdies for Abington Heights while matching Honesdale’s Kayla Benson for medalist with 37s.
Munley, partner Robby Lucas, the combination of Alec Hamilton and Luke Swank as well as Luke Morgan all won in both singles and better ball for the unbeaten Comets.
Hazleton Area defeated Dallas, 163-176, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Class 3A Division match.
Connor Matteo shot a 1-under-par, 35 at Irem Temple and Hazleton Area teammate Gabe Fatula added a 39.
Ryan Vallach’s 43 led Dallas.
Berwick defeated Nanticoke, 180-222, in WVC Division 2.
GIRLS TENNIS
Dallas lost just 11 games in 10 sets during a 5-0, Wyoming Valley Conference shutout of Wilkes-Barre Area.
Natalie Vincelli-Juliana Konnick won, 6-1, 6-0, at first doubles.
Hayla Bryant, Mahi Dhol and the doubles team of Anna Dorofeeva-Angie Camoni also won 6-0 sets.
The other two WVC matches were also 5-0 shutouts with Tunkhannock beating Holy Redeemer and Wyoming Valley West downing Berwick.
Mia Butka won, 6-0, 6-0, at second singles to lead West Scranton past Western Wayne, 5-0, in a Lackawanna league match.
Gabrielle Chantiloupe won, 6-0, 6-1, at first singles.
In other Lackawanna matches: Holy Cross edged Riverside, 3-2, and North Pocono defeated Dunmore, 4-1.
