Hayden Hosie scored 19 points Tuesday night to lead the way as Holy Cross defeated visiting Mid Valley, 59-47, to take sole possession of the Lackawanna League Division 3 boys basketball lead.
By beating the defending champions in a rematch of the playoff needed to decide last season’s division title, the Crusaders emerged as the last team with an unbeaten record in division play.
Gabe Gonzales added 16 points in the win and Michael Hughes added 11.
The win was the fourth straight overall for Holy Cross. The Crusaders, ranked third among Small School boys teams in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams, are 3-0 in the division and 7-3 overall.
No. 2 Mid Valley dropped to 2-1 and 8-3.
Danny Nemitz had 15 points and Ricky Vinansky 13 for the Spartans.
Mid Valley’s last lead was at 9-8 late in the first quarter.
Holy Cross scored the last four points of the first quarter and the first five of the second for a 17-9 lead. Hosie had four points in the run and Gonzales hit a 3-pointer early in the second quarter.
Gonzales had 12 points in the middle quarters when Holy Cross outscored Mid Valley, 30-21, to open a 42-30 lead.
While his teammates were going just 2-for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter, Hosie was going 4-for-5 and scoring eight points to keep the Crusaders in control.
Hosie finished 7-for-8 from the line.
