Gary Ferenchick from Wyoming Valley West will become the second coach of a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 girls basketball contender in a week to miss time on the bench because of Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association-imposed suspensions for interactions with game officials.
Ferenchick received a one-game suspension that will be served in Thursday’s home game against Wilkes-Barre Area, the team with which the Lady Spartans share second place in the division.
The suspension stems from Tuesday night’s 49-30, non-league loss at Wyoming Area. Ferenchick received a technical foul during the game and was assessed another on the court after the game.
The two technicals recorded for the same contest result in an ejection – if the game had any time remaining – but still count as disqualification from the game which carries an automatic suspension of at least one game.
Unlike the situation following a freshman game last week that cost Pittston Area coach Jeff Gregory a two-game suspension as well as the varsity game that night, game officials, in their required paperwork, did not indicate Ferenchick’s actions constituted the type of behavior that would invoke the “supplemental” suspension of a second game.
Wyoming Valley West athletic director Nick Gill confirmed via text early Thursday that JV coach Keith Ferenchick, Gary’s brother, will lead the team in Thursday’s game.
