EDITOR’S NOTE: Regular-season basketball divisional title races began to be settled Monday night while others moved toward their conclusion. While NEPASportsNation.com compiles more complete reports, here is a quick recap of Monday’s biggest developments.
Scranton Prep and Pittston Area ended the title races in the big school divisions of the two girls basketball leagues in District 2.
The Lackawanna League Division 1 title was the sixth straight for Scranton Prep, which gradually pulled away from host Honesdale for a 67-40 victory behind 40 combined points from Gianna Cafarella and Bella Dennebaum.
Daniella Ranieli scored 19 points to lead Pittston Area, which was in control from the start of a 51-31 victory at Tunkhannock to repeat as Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 champonship.
Paley Adams scored 14 points an Mia Snyder led host Montrose down the stretch for a 41-32 win over second-place Mountain View to clinch at least a tie for first place in Lackawanna Division 4.
Dunmore also beat a team that started the night in second place.
Amanda Dempsey led a balanced attack with 11 points and Dunmore got its most significant contribution of the season from North Carolina commit Ciera Toomy while remaining unbeaten in Lackawanna Division 3 and knocking host Riverside out of a second-place tie with a 53-27 romp.
Along with the important games for team title races, Morgan Janeski from Wyoming Area reached an individual milestone.
Janeski scored the 1,000th point of her career 1:11 into the first quarter of a 48-9 rout of visiting Hanover Area.
Cafarella scored 21 points and Dennebaum 19 for Scranton Prep, which is two wins from finishing 13-0 for the sixth straight season. The Classics have won 78 straight Lackawanna League games.
Pittston Area ran out to a 12-2 lead and was in front, 17-4, after one quarter.
Snyder had 9 of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as Montrose held on after Mountain View first cut into the four point lead the Lady Meteors took into the quarter.
Toomey, making just her fourth appearance as she works back from reconstructive knee surgery, played a season-high 8:14. During that time, Toomey had eight points, seven rebounds and four assists to help the Lady Bucks outscore the Lady Vikes, 25-10.
Janeski, one of eight players celebrating Senior Night, scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. She helped the Lady Warriors to a 24-0 lead after one quarter.
Lake-Lehman and Holy Redeemer matched wins to remain tied for the WVC Division 2 lead.
Lake-Lehman held host MMI Prep to six points in the first half of a 55-16 victory.
Holy Redeemer used a 20-0 run, carrying over from the third quarter to the fourth, to fight off host Wyoming Seminary, 46-31.
North Pocono held on to a one-game lead in Lackawanna Division 2 by winning, 48-39, at Valley View.
The Lady Trojans remained in front of Wallenpaupack, which defeated visiting West Scranton, 47-29.
