The Lackawanna League continued a season-long trend this week when its fourth-place team, North Pocono, defeated Wyoming Valley Conference second-place team Tunkhannock, leading to upheaval in this week’s Riverfront Sports Super Six Boys Volleyball Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
The WVC has long dominated non-league and district play with the Lackawanna, but that changed this year, at least for the non-league play, which is now complete.
With the latest example, two Lackawanna teams move into the Super Six this week while two WVC teams drop out.
Western Wayne and North Pocono join the rankings while Tunkhannock and Berwick fall out.
The top two teams are still from the WVC.
Holy Redeemer, the WVC champion, holds down first place.
Delaware Valley, which has lost only to the Royals and is the only other WVC team with a win over a Lackawanna opponent, holds on to second.
Abington Heights suffered its first Lackawanna loss this week, but bounced back to defeat Blue Ridge in the finale and take the league title. The Comets held on to third.
Western Wayne, which beat Blue Ridge during the week and wound up tying the Raiders for second place in the Lackawanna, joined the rankings in fourth place.
Blue Ridge moved up from sixth to fifth.
North Pocono joined the rankings in sixth. The Trojans were fourth in the Lackawanna at 7-5, but were 4-1 against WVC teams, including 3-1 against teams in the top four in that conference.
Overall, the Lackawanna went 6-3 in interleague matches with the WVC, including 0-2 against top-ranked Holy Redeemer. Its teams went 5-1 against other winning opponents from the WVC.
