Wyoming Area extended its state playoff run all the way to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 4A state championship game in State College.
The Warriors used their status as the last District 2 team alive in the playoffs to move up a position in the final Riverfront Sports Super Six Baseball Power Rankings of district teams. New Castle beat Wyoming Area, 7-3, in the championship game.
Wyoming Area, unranked much of the season, used its late-season push to make it all the way to third among Big Schools in the final rankings. The Big School category is for Class 6A, 5A and 4A teams.
Two other teams had their seasons end in the state semifinals.
Riverside, which suffered its only loss of the season in the Class 2A semifinals, and Lake-Lehman, which played in the 3A semifinals, wound up 1-2 among Small Schools.
Hazleton Area, the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 and District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional champion, is the No. 1 Big School, as it has been all season. The Cougars were unbeaten until the first round of the state Class 6A tournament.
Abington Heights, the Lackawanna League Division 1 and District 2-4 Class 5A Subregional champion, held on to second. The Comets went to the Class 5A quarterfinals.
Lackawanna Division 2 champion North Pocono slipped from third to fourth. Dallas and Wallenpaupack remained fifth and sixth.
The entire Small School rankings remained the same. Lakeland, Western Wayne, Holy Redeemer and Scranton Prep are third through sixth.
