Scranton High School graduate Jake McCarthy picked up the first two hits of his Major League Baseball career Sunday in Philadelphia while his Arizona Diamondbacks were dropping a 7-4 decision to the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
McCarthy, who made his debut Friday night, went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. He played right field and batted eighth.
Through the first three game series, McCarthy is 2-for-8 (.250). He started in center field and batted seventh Friday, then went 0-for-1 coming off the bench Saturday.
McCarthy hit a bloop double down the right-field line in top of the second inning to drive in a run and cut the Philadelphia lead to 2-1. He singled through the right side with two out in the eighth and came in to score Arizona’s second run of the inning, cutting the deficit to 5-4.
The 24-year-old, who was selected with the 39th overall pick of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft out of the University of Virginia, also produced defensively. He caught a flyball and threw out Bryce Harper at the plate for a double play to end the seventh inning.
