Here is a list of a dozen Players To Watch in District 2 girls volleyball heading into Friday’s start of the season:
Brooklyn Biehl, Nanticoke, senior setter
Biehl broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore when she had 159 assists, 152 service points and 32 aces. Last season, she increased the assist output to 269 on the way to second-team, all-star recognition from Wyoming Valley Conference coaches.
Emma Elias, Tunkhannock, junior libero
The defensive specialist has turned in strong performances in the postseason the last two years, including leading sixth-seeded Tunkhannock past third-seeded North Pocono in the quarterfinals of last year’s District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional. Elias had 219 digs last season.
Melanie Golden, Crestwood, junior setter
Golden had 317 assists and got 38 of her 113 service points with aces last season. She received honorable mention when WVC coaches made their all-star selections.
Kaylee Gryboski, Holy Redeemer, sophomore outside hitter
Gryboski was a second-team Wyoming Valley Conference all-star selection in 2020 as a freshman when she had 104 kills and 50 digs in the regular season for the eventual District 2 Class 2A champions.
Emily Henn, Delaware Valley, junior outside hitter
One of the leaders of Delaware Valley’s District 2 Class 4A championship team, Henn was a first-team, all-star choice by WVC coaches. At just 5-foot-4, she managed 108 kills.
Cecelia Isenberg, Berwick, junior middle hitter
The Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association made Isenberg a Class 3A all-state selection after she helped Berwick reach the state tournament with a perfect record as Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2 champion. Isenberg was a first-team conference all-star choice by WVC coaches. In her second season in the Berwick lineup, Isenberg produced 145 kills, 92 service points, 35 blocks, 18 digs and 10 blocks.
Morgan Nevel, Berwick, junior setter
The second-team WVC all-star selection had 394 assists last season, putting her at 725 just halfway through her high school career. She also contributed 128 digs, 116 service points, 40 aces and 24 kills to Berwick’s unbeaten conference title run.
Kaeli Romanowski, Western Wayne, senior setter/outside hitter
Even though the 2020 schedule was cut in half because of the pandemic, Romanowski enters her senior season with more than 1,000 career assists. She reached that milestone in the district championship match loss to Holy Redeemer. Romanowski was one of the key players on a district championship team as a sophomore and a first-team Lackawanna League all-star as a junior when she showed her versatility by leading the team in blocks and finishing third in kills.
Sarah Steeber, Berwick, junior outside hitter
WVC coaches voted Steeber as their Player of the Year last season when she led Berwick to the district championship. Steeber went over 100 kills for the second straight year and became more well-rounded in her sophomore season. The PVCA all-state selection finished the season with 155 kills, 106 digs, 104 service points and 31 aces.
Myla Vnuk, Nanticoke, senior, outside hitter
The 6-foot-1 Vnuk was one of two unanimous coaches’ all-star selections in the WVC last season when she also was a PVCA all-state choice for her role when the Trojanettes finished second in the 14-team conference.
Kya Yourdon, Dallas, senior, outside hitter/defensive specialist
Yourdon received honorable mention from WVC coaches after producing 85 digs and 69 kills for Dallas last season.
Libby Zick, Blue Ridge, sophomore setter
Zick ran the offense in Blue Ridge’s District 2 Class A title defense as a freshman, registering 260 assists in 11 matches while earning first-team Lackawanna League all-star recognition.
