The North Pocono and Holy Cross girls tennis teams and the Montrose golf team all defeated higher-ranked opponents Thursday.
North Pocono pulled out a pair of three-set victories in doubles to defeat West Scranton, 3-2, while Holy Cross defeated Valley View, 4-1, in Lackawanna League matches.
Montrose downed Lackawanna Trail, 6-3, in a non-league match between defending champions and current leaders of different Lackawanna divisions.
North Pocono (3-1) entered the day as the third-ranked Big School in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Girls Tennis Power Rankings of District 2 teams while West Scranton (1-2) was second.
The Lady Trojans got their three points in two matches where they lost the first set and a third where they needed a tiebreaker to win the first set.
Maddie Carney-Nora Pencek defeated Gianna Tallo-Camilla Sphabmixay, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, at first doubles. Shivani Patel-Ella Salak topped Molly Donovan-Samantha Raphael, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, at second doubles.
North Pocono avenged an upset loss in last year’s District 2 Class 3A team semifinals with the help of Julie Schriver’s 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 victory at first singles over Gabrielle Chantiloupe.
West Scranton’s two points came from Madison Maloney and Mia Butka at second and third singles.
Maloney defeated Parri Salak, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Butka beat Madison Schriver, 6-2, 6-2.
Holy Cross bounced back from a loss to Scranton Prep to improve to 2-1 with its victory over Valley View.
The Lady Crusaders entered the match ranked sixth while the Cougars were fifth among Small Schools.
Montrose fell out of the Scranton Golf Center Super Six Power Rankings this week while Lackawanna Trail remained in the rankings, clinging to the sixth spot among Small Schools.
The Meteors won the meeting of unbeaten teams, improving to 3-0 while the Lions dropped to 5-1-1.
GIRLS TENNIS
Wyoming Seminary and Holy Redeemer remained unbeaten in the Wyoming Valley Conference.
Wyoming Seminary shut out Berwick, 5-0, dropping just a single game in 10 sets.
The singles lineup of Ilana Rosenthal, Ella Krypel and Margaret Mihalick and the second doubles team of Victoria Smulowitz-Bridget Dowd all won, 6-0, 6-0.
Dominica Delayo-Samantha Casey won, 6-1, 6-0, at first doubles.
Holy Redeemer defeated Hanover Area, 4-1.
The Royals swept doubles and won both of the day’s three-set matches for their third straight win to begin the season.
Crestwood moved above .500 by defeating Pittston Area, 4-1, and Wyoming Area posted its first win, 3-2, over Wyoming Valley West.
