Javant McClary led Wilkes-Barre Area to a three-touchdown, halftime lead, then Howie Shiner helped the Wolfpack finish off Pittston Area, 35-21, Saturday afternoon in a non-league game between Wyoming Valley Conference football teams played at Wyoming Valley West’s Spartan Stadium in Kingston.
Shiner, a sophomore, carried 15 times for 185 yards and 2 touchdowns. He ran 65 yards for a third-quarter touchdown and 6 yards for a fourth-quarter score to keep the Patriots from getting closer than 14 points.
Wilkes-Barre Area (2-3) took a 21-0 halftime lead.
McClary ran 11 yards for one touchdown and threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Javon Goodwin for a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. He added a 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Pittston Area scored three times in the second half, including 1- and 5-yard runs by Harry Pugliese in the third quarter.
Shiner’s 65-yard run came 14 seconds after the first Pittston Area score. He scored again with 9:18 left to again restore the 21-point lead.
Robby Barbieri scored the last touchdown on a 1-yard run. Barbieri played quarterback with Pittston Area’s first two quarterbacks out and hit 11 passes for more than 150 yards.
Pugliese caught 6 passes for 97 yards and had a team-high 50 yards rushing for the Patriots, who slipped to 1-4.
