District 2 will determine its girls tennis team championships Thursday while progress continues in some of the close divisional races in soccer.
There are 37 total events across 5 sports, but it’s the six matches scheduled for Kirby Park that will determine two more titles.
Four teams with impressive credentials, including combined records of 53-4, will get it started at 11 a.m. in the Class 2A semifinals. Take out the matches when they played each other, so someone had to lose, and the semifinalists are 51-2.
Unbeaten, top-seed Wyoming Seminary plays fourth-seeded Riverside. In the same matchup a year ago, Riverside knocked off the Wyoming Valley Conference champions.
Defending champion Scranton Prep plays Dallas in a meeting of once-beaten teams. Dallas won 12 straight since losing the opener to Wyoming Seminary.
Top-seeded Abington Heights plays Lackawanna League rival West Scranton in a rematch of last year’s district final in one of the Class 3A semifinals scheduled for 12:30 starts. Abington Heights is the unbeaten Lackawanna champion.
Crestwood and North Pocono meet in the other semifinal.
The Class 2A final follows the Class 3A semifinals, then the Class 3A final takes the court.
The Lackawanna Division 2 girls soccer race continues to churn out intriguing matchups, often more than one at a time.
The top four teams go against each other in two games.
First-place Lakeland and second-place Montrose each play one of the teams tied for third, just 1½ games out of the lead.
Lakeland (10-0 in the division, 12-1 overall) is at Mountain View (8-2, 9-4) while Western Wayne (8-2, 8-3-1) I at Montrose (9-2).
Delaware Valley, which had been the district’s last unbeaten girls soccer team, tries to bounce back from its first loss and protect its Lackawanna Division 1 lead. The Lady Warriors (10-1, 13-1-1) are home against Wallenpaupack (5-4-1, 6-5-1).
Wyoming Valley West (8-2-1, 10-3-2) is at Berwick (6-4, 10-4) in a WVC Division 1 game.
Two of the top three teams in WVC Division 2 boys soccer meet when Lake-Lehman (6-4, 7-8) plays at Holy Redeemer (7-3, 9-5).
There are also field hockey games and girls volleyball matches on the schedule.
