The District 2 girls volleyball tournament concludes while the girls soccer tournament semifinals are held Thursday.
The gym at the new Wilkes-Barre Area High School makes its debut as a district championship site when it hosts the volleyball championship doubleheader.
A young Holy Redeemer team will try to extend the school’s streak of perfection in district volleyball.
Holy Redeemer has won the district championship in all 14 years of the school’s history and a 15th straight if counting a title in the last year of Bishop Hoban, which was in the same Wilkes-Barre building before a merger of schools created Holy Redeemer.
The Lady Royals take on Lake-Lehman in the 5 p.m. opener. Both teams knocked off higher seeds from the Lackawanna League on the road in the semifinals.
Sophomore Olivia Bilbow had 11 kills and 23 service points when Holy Redeemer won their Wyoming Valley Conference meeting, 25-12, 25-12, 25-15.
Berwick is the top seed and defending champion for the Class 3A final against Nanticoke, which will be played a half hour after the conclusion of the Class 2A match.
Both teams have strong setter-hitter combinations.
Berwick is led by Morgan Nevel and Cecelia Isenberg while Nanticoke counters with Brooklyn Biehl and Myla Vnuk.
When they met late in the season, Nanticoke took the first set, 25-17, before Berwick, which has only lost to district Class 4A champion Delaware Valley, responded, 25-10, 25-11, 25-21.
Isenberg had 26 kills in that match while Nevel had 29 assists, 17 digs and 15 points. Vnuk had 19 kills.
The Class 4A tournament in girls soccer is a subregional. District 4’s Williamsport is the defending District 2-4 Subregional champion heading into its match at Delaware Valley, which is defending District 2 champion after falling to the Millionaires last season.
Both Class 4A semifinals, including Wilkes-Barre Area at Wyoming Valley West, are 5 p.m. starts.
The only event on the schedule starting prior to 5 is Holy Redeemer at Wyoming Area in Class 2A at 3:30. Nanticoke is at Lake-Lehman in the other semifinal at 5:30.
Class A features Dunmore at defending champion Montrose at 5 and Mountain View at top-seeded Lakeland at 6.
The Class 3A semifinals have Crestwood at top-seeded Abington Heights at 6 and defending champion Berwick at Dallas at 6:30.
