Most of Thursday’s scheduled sports action in District 2 takes place on the basketball court.
Following the steady flow of postponements and schedule adjustments as schools deal with COVID, as of 8 a.m. Thursday, there were nine boys basketball games, five girls basketball games, one wrestling match and one boys and girls swimming meet scheduled.
Some basketball teams are still opening their league schedules. That includes potential Lackawanna League Division 2 boys contender Wallenpaupack and Division 1 favorite/defending champion Scranton.
The boys schedule is highlighted by Wallenpaupack at North Pocono, Riverside at Dunmore, Mid Valley at Old Forge and Scranton at Valley View.
Wallenpaupack (5-2) is at defending champion North Pocono (1-0 in the league, 6-1 overall) in Lackawanna Division 2.
Riverside is at Dunmore in a Lackawanna Division 3 game between ranked teams who won their league opener. The Vikings (1-0, 7-1) are second among Small School boys teams in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams. The No. 5 Bucks are 1-0 and 5-4.
Preseason favorite Mid Valley (1-0, 6-2) is at Old Forge (0-0, 4-3) in another Division 3 game.
Scranton (0-0, 5-0) is at Valley View (0-1, 4-4) in Lackawanna Division 1.
The girls schedule is highlighted by a meeting between the two teams that needed a playoff to decide last season’s Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 title.
Defending champion Lake-Lehman (1-0, 3-1) is at Holy Redeemer (1-0, 4-5).
Another girls game sends Hazleton Area (1-0, 4-3) to Tunkhannock (0-1, 4-3) in WVC Division 1.
The only swimming meet is in the Lackawanna where West Scranton is at Elk Lake while the only wrestling match is a non-leaguer, Honesdale at Dallas.
