A city rivalry with an established power taking on a rising threat highlights the Monday schedule of District 2 sporting events.

West Scranton and Scranton face off in a Lackawanna League Division 1 boys basketball game.

Although it is technically West Scranton’s home game on the schedule, the Invaders have been using Scranton High School’s gym for home games and will be again in this case.

Scranton is 1-0 in the Lackawanna, 5-0 overall and ranked first in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings throughout the season as the defending division and District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional champion.

After going 3-11 last season, West Scranton is also 1-0 in the league and is 7-2 overall.

The girls schedule features a league opener for what may be the Wyoming Valley Conference’s most impressive team of the non-league portion of the schedule and a Lackawanna League game between ranked teams.

Dallas is 5-0 overall and ranked second among Big Schools in the Super Six heading into its home game with defending WVC Division 1 champion Berwick.

Berwick is 0-2 in the division, losing one- and two-point games last week to slip to 3-6 overall.

Mid Valley is at Holy Cross in a game between ranked Small Schools that each won league openers Saturday. The No. 5 Spartanettes (7-1 overall) face the No. 3 Lady Crusaders (3-4).

There is just one wrestling match on the schedule with Blue Ridge (0-3 in the division, 1-6) at Mountain View (0-2, 0-3). They are the only two teams in Lackawanna Division 2 without a divisional victory.
