Abington Heights takes over No. 1

Lackawanna League Division 1 leader Abington Heights took over the top spot while Division 2 leader North Pocono made the biggest move in the latest Riverfront Sports Super Six Softball Power Rankings of District 2 teams, released Wednesday morning.

Abington Heights is the new No. 1 team among Big Schools after beating Honesdale, 5-4, in its only game.

Tunkhannock slipped to the second spot after a 3-1 week in which it lost within the district for the first time and pulled out two of the wins by a single run.

North Pocono won twice in the week, including pounding former No. 3 West Scranton, 14-2, to jump from sixth to third. The Lady Trojans have outscored opponents, 57-8, in their four-game winning streak.

Honesdale split its games and remained fourth.

Pittston Area played three one-run games, two of them with Tunkhannock, and went 2-1 to hold fifth.

Hazleton Area rejoined the rankings in sixth while West Scranton dropped out. The Lady Cougars went 4-1 in the week with the only loss coming to Pittston Area, 10-9.

There was also movement in the Small School rankings where Holy Cross and Elk Lake moved up and Dunmore joined the list for the first time.

Once-beaten division leaders Holy Redeemer and Mid Valley remain 1-2. Holy Redeemer had three wins, including one by forfeit over Wyoming Seminary. Mid Valley won both its games by shutout.

Holy Cross and Elk Lake moved into the third and fourth spots, each gaining one position from a week ago.

Holy Cross went 2-1 with the loss coming to Holy Redeemer, 11-8.

Elk Lake maintained its status as District 2’s only team when it defeated Montrose, 23-5, in its only game.

Lake-Lehman lost its last two games, one of them to Big School No. 2 Tunkhannock, and dropped from third to fifth.

Dunmore replaces Old Forge in the sixth spot. The Lady Bucks went 2-1 during the week. They have won four of their last five, including a victory over Old Forge. Their season losses include a pair of one-run games, a two-run game and another by three runs.
