Sophomore Gianna Adams threw her second no-hitter in three playoff games and Bella Giardina hit a home run Thursday as Pittston Area shut out West Scranton, 1-0, to claim the District 2-4 Class 5A Subregional softball championship at Marywood University.

Adams was perfect through four innings and the game was scoreless through five.

Giardina led off the top of the sixth inning with her homer for the game’s only scoring.

While Adams was striking out 10, Pittston Area was threatening more often.

Kallie Booth started the game with a single and had three hits.

Marina Antal tripled off the right field fence in the second.

Booth and Sage Weidlich had back-to-back hits in the third and fifth innings.

Giardina’s homer was enough to keep Pittston Area unbeaten.

The Lady Patriots open the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament Monday at or near home against District 3 third-place finisher South Western (18-4) from York County.

Thursday’s championship, postponed from Wednesday because of thunderstorms, matched the top two Big Schools in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Although District 2 had West Scranton seeded first and Pittston Area third, the Super Six had the Lady Patriots ranked as the No. 1 team.

Defending champion West Scranton (19-2) was ranked second.
