The Big South Conference named Rachael Rose as its Freshman of the Week in women’s basketball Monday afternoon.
Rose, the University of South Carolina Upstate freshman from Scranton Prep, went 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) with 35 points, 8 rebounds, 7 steals and 6 assists in a pair of wins by the Spartans during the week that ended Sunday.
The graduate of the NEPA Elite Clark 17U AAU team out of Riverfront Sports in Scranton went into Monday night leading the Big South in steals (nine) and steals per game (3.0).
Rose had 23 points and 7 steals in her second college game, Tuesday’s 70-51 victory over South Carolina State. She was 5-for-7 with 12 more points Friday in an 81-40 rout of Columbia International.
USC Upstate, coached by Abington Heights graduate Becky Burke, fell to 2-2 Monday night when it lost, 76-54, at the University of Florida. Rose had six points, two steals, a blocked shot and a rebound.
Through four games, Rose is averaging 11.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.8 assists. She is shooting 18-for-37 (48.7 percent) from the floor, 2-for-7 (28.6) from 3-point range and 9-for-11 (81.8) from the line.
