ALUMNI REPORT: D-I basketball

Tuesday’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I basketball schedule featured a pair of District 2 graduates playing in conference tournaments in Atlantic City.

Tuesday’s result

Mount St. Mary’s, the No. 8 seed (13-19), defeated Canisius, the No. 9 seed (10-20), 67-66, in overtime in the first round of the MAAC Tournament.

Started, played 34 minutes; 4/5 FG, 2/2 on 3-pointers, 0/4 FT, 10 points; 3 offensive, 8 defensive, 11 total rebounds; 5 assists.

Tinsley recorded his second double-double of the year as Mount St. Mary’s outlasted Canisius in overtime. … The Mount closed within 33-26 at halftime on a Tinsley 3-pointer and came out strong in the second half to tie the score with 13:57 remaining. … Mount St. Mary’s went on a 9-0 run at the midpoint of the second half to take a seven-point advantage. Tinsley and Xavier Lipscomb each scored in the paint to start the run. … Canisius’ Jordan Henderson drained a 3-pointer with 23.2 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score. The Mount turned the ball over on the final possession, forcing overtime. … The Mountaineers opened the overtime period scoring the first basket but Canisius scored the next five points to build a 66-63 lead with 2:37 remaining. Jedy Cordillia cut the deficit to one on a hook shot, and after a stop on the defensive end, Dakota Leffew scored on a turnaround jumper with 1:35 remaining to provide the final margin of victory.

Mount St. Mary’s, the No. 8 seed, advances to play Iona, the No. 1 seed, in a MAAC Tournament quarterfinal game. Iona (24-7) comes in on an 11-game winning streak under coach Rick Pitino. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Atlantic City.

6-foot-2 senior center from Dunmore

Tuesday’s result

Rider, the No. 10 seed (10-20), defeated Marist, the No. 7 seed (12-18), 63-50, in an MAAC first round game.

Started, played 31 minutes; 4/7 FG, 2/2 FT, 10 points; 2 offensive, 3 defensive, 5 total rebounds; 1 assist; 2 turnovers; 1 block; 2 steals.

Notes

Rider defeated Marist for the second time in four days to advance to the quarterfinal round of the MAAC Women’s Tournament. …Toomey’s 10 points mark the 13th time this season she has scored in double figures. … Leading 13-10 early in the second quarter, Rider’s Amanda Mobley scored five straight points to extend the lead to eight and the Broncos led, 29-19, at halftime. … Marist used a 16-3 scoring run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter to tie the game, 46-46. Rider had an immediate answer as Mobley and Makayla Firebaugh sparked a 12-0 run that decided the game. … Rider won all three games over the Red Foxes this season.
