Hunter Lawall struck out 14 in a no-hitter and also drove in three runs Tuesday when Wyoming Area shut out visiting Holy Redeemer, 7-0, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 baseball game at Atlas Field.
Lawall faced one batter over the minimum, walking just one.
Jack Mathis, John Morgan and Lawall each had two hits. Morgan drove in two runs. Mathis doubled for the team’s only extra-base hit and scored a run.
The Warriors scored in the second and third innings, then broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Wyoming Area, which was playing its WVC opener, improved to 4-0 overall.
Lawall’s wasn’t the only strong pitching performance.
Nick Finarelli struck out nine and threw five no-hit innings as part of a combined two-hitter with Ty Federici when Lake-Lehman shut out Nanticoke, 9-0, in another WVC Division 2 game.
It was also the fourth straight win for the Black Knights since losing their opener.
Mason Sgarlat gave up just one hit in six innings as Wyoming Valley West blanked Berwick, 9-0, in WVC Division 1.
Will Youngman did not get a decision, but he struck out 16 as Wyoming Seminary’s starting pitcher in a WVC Division 2 game that the Blue Knights eventually won, 4-3, in eight innings over MMI Prep.
