CLASS 4A BOYS SOCCER RECAP: Abington Heights defeats Wolfpack

Kohen Stiles scored with 2:32 remaining Friday afternoon to lift Abington Heights over visiting Wilkes-Barre Area, 2-1, for the District 2-4 Class 4A Subregional boys soccer title.

The teams were scoreless at halftime.

Sam Specht then put Abington Heights in front 6:35 into the second half off a cross from Michael Maldonado.

Jefry Campo Paz tied the game for Wilkes-Barre Area on an unassisted goal with 11:40 remaining.

2Stiles then scored the game-winner off a Michael Hartshorn cross.

Abington Heights, the Lackawanna League Division 1 champion and the tournament’s top seed, held a 10-8 advantage in shots and a 2-1 lead in corner kicks.

Nick Slusser made five saves for the Comets.

Joe Egidio had two saves for Wilkes-Barre Area.

Abington Heights (18-1) advances into the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state playoffs where it will host District 1 fourth-place finisher Pennridge (16-7) Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a Class 4A first-round game.

SEMIFINALS

Abington Heights 2, Delaware Valley 0

Nick Slusser had a four-save shutout as Abington Heights made it through Wednesday’s semifinal, which was also scoreless at halftime.

Sam Specht assisted on the first goal, then scored the second unassisted.

Nico Bustos opened the scoring 5:49 into the half. Specht scored with 11:04 left.

Abington Heights led 15-8 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks.

Lucas Pauley had six saves for Delaware Valley.

Wilkes-Barre Area 1, Hazleton Area 0

Campos Paz scored the game’s only goal early in the second half and Egidio made six saves to send the Wolfpack into the final with a victory over the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 champions.

QUARTERFINALS

Delaware Valley 3, Williamsport 2

Karter Peereboom scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner, in the Oct. 31 game.

Wilkes-Barre Area 4, Wyoming Valley West 0

Campos Paz and Evan Corcoran scored twice each in the Oct. 31 win.

Campos Paz and John Barker had assists.

Egidio made 10 saves for the shutout.

Hazleton Area 4, Scranton 1

Gavin Huey scored his 50th career goal as Hazleton Area opened its attempted title defense with an Oct. 31 victory.
