Classics pound 2nd-place Cougars

Scranton Prep continued to separate itself from the pack.

Facing its closest pursuer in the Lackawanna League Division 1 and District 2 Class 4A girls basketball races, the Classics ran away early Monday night.

Maya Jenkins scored 11 of her game-high 16 points in the first quarter as Scranton Prep pounded visiting Valley View, 58-23, to open an early two-game lead on its path to a possible sixth straight Lackawanna Division 1 title.

Scranton Prep has won 72 straight Lackawanna League games, most without being seriously threatened.

Monday night was another of those cases even though Valley View came into the game with wins in five of its last six games overall and its only loss against Division 2 leader Wallenpaupack.

Jenkins made three 3-pointers in the first quarter, which ended with Scranton Prep in front, 23-4.

The Classics made it 35-9 at halftime by holding the Cougars to one second-quarter field goal, then led 53-19 going into the fourth quarter.

Jenna Hillebrand added 6 points in the first quarter and 13 in the game.

Bella Dennebaum added eight points off the bench.

Valley View had just eight field goals, including a pair of Molly Murphy 3-pointers in the third quarter.

Murphy led Valley View with 10 points. Giada Costa added nine points.

Scranton Prep, the No. 1 Big School girls team all season in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams, is 5-0 in the league and 11-1 overall. The Classics are also well in front in the race for the top seed in the District 2 Class 4A playoffs.

The Classics have played their four divisional opponents once each already. They outscored them, 207-102, with only fourth-place Scranton creating a close game.

Valley View dropped to 3-2 and 9-5.
