Comets win tourney, rise to No. 2

Abington Heights placed more than half its wrestlers in the top three of their weight classes in the 22-team Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament to capture the team title and move up in this week’s Riverfront Sports Elite Eight Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Hazleton Area also moved up as the top half of the rankings was shuffled.

The new rankings were released on New Year’s Eve.

Lackawanna Trail remained in the No. 1 spot after placing 19th out of 49 teams at the MyHouse Trojan Wars in Chambersburg.

Abington Heights climbed from third to second with its win in Jim Thorpe. Luke Sirianni (113) and Sal Schiavone (160) won titles; Austin Smith (145) and Caleb Marzolino (172) were second; and Sam Stevens (132), Brian Heard (138) and Hutch Lynott (189) were third.

Hazleton Area jumped from fifth to third after finishing 14th in the Bethlehem Wrestling Classic, one spot in front of Delaware Valley.

Delaware Valley, which had edged Abington Heights out of second place behind Lackawanna Trail in the Lackawanna League Wrestling Tournament a week earlier, slipped from second to fourth.

Wyoming Area drops one place to fifth.

Pittston Area, Wallenpaupack and Western Wayne remain in sixth through eighth place.

Wallenpaupack placed third at Jim Thorpe.

None of the ranked teams participated in any dual meets during the holiday week.
