Crestwood in subregional final, state tournament in field hockey

Crestwood and Selinsgrove posted one-goal victories Friday to earn spots in the District 2-4 Class 2A Subregional field hockey championship game and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament.

Overtime was needed for Crestwood to get past visiting Wyoming Valley West, 2-1, while District 4 power Selinsgrove needed to hold off a Wallenpaupack comeback for a 3-2 victory.

The teams will meet Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Wyoming Seminary’s Nesbitt Stadium to decide the subregional title.

They will then move into the state tournament where the subregional champion opens with the District 1 runner-up. The runner-up faces the third-place team from District 3. Both subregionalist finalists get to open the state tournament in their home district.

Crestwood qualified for the state tournament when it defeated Wyoming Valley West in last year’s district final, but an unfortunately timed COVID situation prevented the Lady Comets from participating.

The Lady Comets earned another chance when Kylah Kelly scored the game-winning goal in sudden-death and Isabella Caporuscio made 17 saves in Friday’s semifinal.

Emma Guydish scored on a penalty stroke in the first quarter, then assisted Kelly’s game-winner.

Marissa Mooney’s third-quarter goal for Wyoming Valley West made the overtime necessary.

Wallenpaupack fell behind Selinsgrove, 3-0, with 5:56 remaining in the first half.

The Seals, who wrapped up their 17th straight District 4 title when they beat Shikellamy in the subregional quarterfinal, qualified for their 20th straight state tournament by turning back the comeback effort by the Lady Buckhorns.

Hannah Karp scored early in the third quarter and midway through the fourth quarter for Wallenpaupack.

Alayna Davis, Isabella Napoli and Allison Bucher scored for Selinsgrove.

Crestwood is 17-2, including 3-0 against District 4 opponents.

Selinsgrove is 15-5, but just 2-3 against District 2 teams.

The subregional final follows Tuesday’s doubleheader opener at 6 when Honesdale and Hazleton Area play for the District 2 Class 3A championship.
