D-I BASKETBALL: NJIT men win

Sunday’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I basketball schedule featured three District 2 graduates in action.

Here is a recap of how each did:

GEORGE TINSLEY, MOUNT ST. MARY’S MEN

Sunday’s result

Mount St. Mary’s (5-7 overall) lost to visiting Robert Morris (5-7 overall), 68-59

Started, played 35 minutes; 4/6 FG, 0/2 on 3-pointers, 8 points; 1 offensive, 5 defensive, 6 total rebounds; 2 assists; 1 steal.

Mount St. Mary’s rallied from a double-digit, second-half deficit to take the lead but came up short of the victory. … The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw 11 lead changes and six ties. Robert Morris led, 22-16, but the Mountaineers answered with eight unanswered to take the lead. Tinsley scored consecutive buckets to end the run and put the Mount on top, 24-22. … The second half was much of the same with each team going on scoring runs. The Mount led 55-54 but Robert Morris responded with a 5-0 run. Tinsley scored on a drive to cut the deficit to 59-57 with 4:01 remaining.

DA’MIR FAISON, NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MEN

6-foot-7 junior forward from Hazleton Area

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) (2-9) defeated visiting Niagara (5-5), 62-53.

Came off the bench, played 11 minutes; 1/4 FG, 0/1 on 3-pointers, 2 points; 1 offensive, 4 defensive, 5 total rebounds; 1 block.

NJIT’s Kevin Osawe posted his second double-double of the season as NJIT held off visiting Niagara. … The Highlanders had a 14-5 scoring run over the final six minutes of the first half to lead 36-24 at halftime. … Faison’s five rebounds ties his season-high.

KYLIE LAVELLE, DREXEL UNIVERSITY WOMEN

6-foot-2 freshman forward from Riverside

Sunday’s result

Drexel (7-3) defeated visiting Penn State (8-4), 86-82 in overtime.

Did not play.

Notes

Lavelle remains sidelined with an undisclosed lower-body injury. … Drexel’s Keishana Washington scored a career-high 42 points, including 15-for-18 from the free-throw line. … The victory was the Dragons’ first win against a Big Ten school since beating Penn State in November 2016. … Penn State has lost four consecutive games after starting the season 8-0.
