District 2 recap – Thursday, 4/6

Here are some of the day’s highlights:

MAIN EVENT

Dallas needed overtime to remain unbeaten in Wyoming Valley Conference girls lacrosse with a 10-9 victory at Wyoming Seminary.

Gabby Rogoski’s fifth goal of the game decided it in overtime.

TOP PERFORMERS

Amelia Bell, North Pocono softball – Bell threw a five-inning, no-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk as North Pocono shut out Nanticoke, 10-0, in a non-league game.

Isabella Caporuscio, Crestwood girls lacrosse – Caporuscio scored 12 goals and assisted on 2 others as Crestwood defeated North Pocono, 23-10, to join Dallas in moving a half-game in front of Abington Heights at the top of the WVC.

Kaya Hannon, Tunkhannock softball – Hannon threw a three-inning perfect game n a 21-0, WVC Division 1 victory over Wilkes-Barre Area. She was also 1-for-2 with a double, walk, run and RBI from the leadoff spot in the order.

Paige Marabell, Tunkhannock softball – Marabell hit two grand slams before the first inning was over in Tunkhannock’s 21-0 rout of Wilkes-Barre Area in 2½ innings. Marabell went 3-for-3 with nine RBI.

Zack Yenchko, MMI Prep baseball – Yenchko went 3-for-4 with three RBI as MMI Prep downed Wyoming Area, 4-3, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 baseball game.

KEY CONTRIBUTORS

Andrew Burns, MMI Prep baseball – Leadoff hitter Burns was hitless for the day before driving in the tying and winning runs with a single in the top of the seventh to rally the Preppers at Wyoming Area.

Carson Gallagher, Blue Ridge boys volleyball – Gallagher had 21 of the team’s 24 assists, tied for the team lead with 6 digs and added 5 kills in a 25-18, 25-18, 25-7 sweep of Mountain View as Blue Ridge improved the district’s best overall record to 8-0.

Julia Glowacki, Crestwood girls lacrosse – Glowacki scored three times and had a game-high five assists in the win over North Pocono.

TOP DEVELOPMENT

Crestwood won both the boys and girls team titles in the Northwest Rangers Invitational track and field meet. The Comets led 13 scoring teams in boys and 14 in girls. Eight of those teams in each set of standings were from District 2.

The Comets had 118 points to beat out host Northwest, which outscored Lake-Lehman, 80-69, for second place. The Lady Comets had 84 points to finish ahead of Tunkhannock’s 66 and Lake-Lehman’s 60.

The Crestwood boys were led by their sprinting combination. Freshman Jaden Shedlock, George Jennings and Ricardo Williams finished 1-2-3 in the 100-meter dash and were part of the winning 400 relay team. Jennings was first and Shedlock second in the 200 dash.

Northwest is no longer a District 2 member, but still competes in the Wyoming Valley Conference in track and field and cross country.

BY THE NUMBERS

Amaya Monacelli from North Pocono scored seven goals in the girls lacrosse loss to Crestwood, giving the sophomore 20 in 2 games this week and pushing her past 100 for her career.

DID YOU KNOW?

MMI Prep finished last in WVC Division 2 baseball last season while Wyoming Area was finishing tied for first before losing a playoff to Lake-Lehman. Thursday’s MMI Prep win and Wyoming Area loss matched the season totals in the division last year for those teams when the Preppers went 1-11 and the Warriors were 11-1.
