Here are some of the day’s highlights:
MAIN EVENT
Brett Antolick and Antonio Doganiero combined to strike out 15 as Hazleton Area defeated Pittston Area, 6-2, in a meeting of the top two Big Schools in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Baseball Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
The Cougars handed the Patriots their first loss to take over sole possession of the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 lead.
Antolick gave up two runs on four hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Doganiero struck out eight without walking a batter in three scoreless innings, giving up two hits.
Dom Marino had two of Hazleton Area’s six hits and Richie Rossi scored twice.
Anthony Cencetti had two hits and drove in both Pittston Area runs.
TOP PERFORMERS
Emily Franklin, North Pocono girls track and field – Franklin won the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs to lead North Pocono past Western Wayne, 100-44, in a Lackawanna Track Conference Division 2 meet.
Aria Messner, Pittston Area girls track and field – Messner set a school record with a long jump of 18-4½ during a 110½-39½ victory over Wilkes-Barre Area in a WVC Division 1 meet.
Aiden Paduck, Tunkhannock baseball – Paduck threw a one-hitter with six strikeouts and led the offense in a 10-0, WVC Division 1 win over Crestwood. He had three hits, three runs and two RBI.
Zach Perta, Holy Redeemer boys track and field – Perta won the 100-meter dash, 110 high hurdles and high jump, along with anchoring the winning 400 relay when Holy Redeemer defeated Lake-Lehman, 82-58, in a WVC Division 2 meet.
Maranda Runco, Mid Valley softball – Runco struck out 16 in Mid Valley’s fifth straight shutout, a three-hitter with one walk during an 11-0 win over Lakeland in Lackawanna League Division 2. She also homered, drew two walks and drove in three runs.
KEY CONTRIBUTORS
Madison Kizer, Mid Valley softball – Kizer went 3-for-5 with two triples, two runs and two RBI in the win over Lakeland.
Charlie Welles, Tunkhannock baseball – Welles doubled twice, drove in three runs and scored twice in the win over Crestwood.
TOP DEVELOPMENTS
Carbondale defeated Forest City, 8-2, in a meeting of Lackawanna Division 3 softball unbeatens.
North Pocono was down, 3-0, before scoring six runs in the top of the fifth on the way to handing Wallenpaupack its first Lackawanna Division 1 softball loss, 8-6.
Division 1 leader North Pocono, Division 2 co-leaders Honesdale and Mid Valley and Division 3’s Carbondale remained unbeaten in Lackawanna baseball with wins. Carbondale moved into a tie for first with Elk Lake.
QUICK HITS
Holy Redeemer overcame a six-run deficit after 1½ innings and a three-run deficit in the last half-inning to defeat Lake-Lehman, 11-10, in a game between two of the three WVC Division 2 baseball teams that started the day unbeaten.
Jeremy Staples had two doubles, a single and four RBI, then pitched the last inning, giving up only one run as North Pocono outslugged Wallenpaupack, 15-11, in a Lackawanna Division 1 baseball game.
Mason Stets had four hits and winning pitcher Jamie McMynne drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Dunmore over Riverside, 7-6, in Lackawanna Division 2 baseball.
Sophia Lenza, Amanda McGurk, Faye Post, Kalee Raczkowski and Lydia Vivian each won two individual events as Lake-Lehman defeated Holy Redeemer, 93-56, in a WVC Division 2 girls track and field meet between ranked teams.
Hannah Chipego struck out all six batters she faced in the first half of a four-inning, no-hitter for Lake-Lehman in its 16-0, WVC Division 2 rout of Hanover Area.
BY THE NUMBERS
Facing a Pittston Area team that came in averaging 10.5 runs per game in its 6-0 start, Antolick and Doganiero yielded six hits, but Hazleton Area escaped further damage with their 15 strikeouts.
In doing so, the Cougars held the Patriots to two runs.
