Crestwood, Lackawanna Trail and four-time defending champion Wyoming Seminary all opened the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 field hockey season with shutouts Monday.
For Crestwood, the season opened with a rematch of the last game of 2020. The Lady Comets were able to produce the same result.
Aubrey Macri and Emma George scored first-quarter goals and Crestwood shut out Wyoming Valley West, 2-0, in a game that was stopped early in the third quarter because of lightning.
Crestwood upset Wyoming Valley West in last year’s District 2 Class 2A championship, but ended its season there when COVID-19 protocols kept the Lady Comets from participating in the state tournament.
The Lady Comets were busy in the season’s first 11 days and used the win to become the first WVC team at 5-0 overall.
Ava McConnell and Emma Guydish had assists.
The game matched teams in the Golden Dome Abstract Super Six Field Hockey Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
In another such meeting, Lackawanna Trail shut out Lake-Lehman, 3-0.
Lena Ryon scored in the first and second quarters for Lackawanna Trail before Abby Fahey connected in the third.
Dariana Jones and Lauren Fahey had assists as the Lady Lions piled up the shots.
Faye Post made 21 saves for Lake-Lehman.
Ella Barbacci scored three goals and Emma Watchilla added two for Wyoming Seminary in an 8-0 victory over Hazleton Area.
In other Division 1 openers: Wyoming Area defeated Holy Redeemer, 6-1, and Honesdale downed Wilkes-Barre Area, 3-1.
Bianca Pizano and Nina Angeli scored twice each for Wyoming Area while Toni Minichello added a goal and three assists.
