Dallas senior guard Austin Finarelli was named to the second team Friday morning when Pennsylvania Sports Writers announced their Class 4A all-state boys basketball selections.

Finarelli led Dallas to a school-record 27 wins and its first-ever Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state semifinal appearance. Along the way, he averaged 20 points and two 3-pointers per game and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career.

The selection mirrors Thursday’s announcement of Holy Redeemer’s Justice Shoats as second-team, all-state in Class 2A.

Both Finarelli and Shoats improved their basketball games at the same time they were adding sports to become three-sport athletes. They led the Wyoming Valley Conference’s two divisions in scoring, each earning Player of the Year honors from NEPABasketball.com while also leading their teams to division and district championships.

Teammates in the summer of 2021 on the NEPA Elite Coyle 17U AAU team, they each added spring and fall sports since the end of their junior seasons in high school basketball.

Shoats became a state long jump champion in the spring of 2021 in his first season in track and field and returned to football in the fall, earning WVC Division 2 Offensive Player of the Year honors from NEPAFootball.com.

Finarelli played high school golf for the first time in the fall and was a key contributor on a Dallas team that finished sixth in the state in Class 3A. He joined the volleyball team this spring and was prominent in Dallas improving from 5-6 to 8-2 in the WVC.

In all three boys players, five girls players and one girls coach from District 2 have been all-state with the Class 5A and 6A boys teams still to be announced Saturday and Sunday.

Old Forge junior Joe Macciocco made the third team in Class 2A.
